‘Two/Three, the second in a trilogy of LPs from Detroit beatmaker Dabrye (AKA Tadd Mullinix), has earned massive praise worldwide as one of the most innovative underground hip-hop records of the decade. By overwhelming demand, Ghostly now offers Two/Three Instrumentals, a collection of Mullinix’s productions sans MCs that showcases his Midas touch and trademark handmade style. The exquisite thump of tracks like “Encoded Flow” is proof that Dabrye is one of those rare producers whose uncommonly detail-driven creations stand just as strongly on their own as when accompanied by lyrics, and the collection as a whole affirms Mullinix’s contention that hip-hop is electronic music.’

M.I.A.:

Dedicated to all my friends that died at 27.

LYRIX
= = = = = =
said your all mouth and no brains
all rock stars go to heaven
you said you’ll be dead at 27
when we drunk in a English tavern
the owner poured you the Bourbon
and you drunk your self so rotten
he got so rich he bought a Bentley
and moved himself to Devon

you started dirty dancing
and you bar tended a dozen
i took you to the clinic
to get you clean but you couldn’t
said in 2 days ur 27 and and ur destiny was comin
and ur papa passed so sudden
and left you with lil somin

you blew that money on a mountain of drugs
and staged your self a bedin
a month later when i popped in
your still high but the winter set in
i bought you a coffee and a muffin
and you quoted me some Lenin
i wished i was that clever
but thats what kept me coming
your friendship did mean somin
but you left me for nothin
when i left, you befriended a rope
and i found you both were hanging.

The Big Ideas podcast: The medium is the message

‘In the first of a series of philosophy podcasts, Benjamen Walker and guests discuss the communication theorist Marshall McLuhan and his most famous line’

Hello, Global Villagers!

I’m very proud to share this new Guardian/Big Ideas podcast that radio maverick Benjamen Walker produced — just in time for the 100th anniversary of Marshall McLuhan’s birth.

I consider myself a huge fan and disciple of McLuhan; discovering by happy accident his Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, at age 19, set in motion the perceptual tremors whose reverberations shook up forever my entire view of the world, as well as shifting the very course of my life.

So it’s with a mix of excitement and humility that I can say I was lucky enough to be able to contribute a little piece of music to the podcast: my track Asymmetry provides the rhythmic ground for the philosophical figures in the second half of the show.

Do have a listen, and feel free to share the earbrain mass-mess-age!

thomasraukamp:

Ghostly International and Rush Hour have teamed up to release select tracks for a 12” white label version of Shigeto’s ‘Full Circle Remixes’. This is one of the lovely results.

Previously unreleased tracks from my “conceptual drum n bass” album under the name Blysk. Storm Threads was begun during the particularly electric-stormy summer of 2001, and was finally ‘done’ (read: abandoned!) circa 2003. Hope you enjoy, despite the unmastered, somewhat lower-fidelity sound! Thanks for listening.
